Course Title:  CARAVAGGIO and his times

Course Description: This NEW virtual course using the zoom platform covers the   life and works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610).  In his short life spanning 38 years he worked in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily.  His work combines a realistic observation of the human life both physical and emotional.  His dramatic use of light is very unique and had a profound impact on Baroque painting. Experience analysis of Caravaggio's work and lengthy researched commentaries by Joseph Paul Cassar. 

Total No. of Sessions: 8 (1 and a half hours each)

WHEN: MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS (twice a week)

Joseph Paul Cassar, Ph.D., is an artist, scholar, curator and educator. He lectures in art history and appreciation and teaches studio art: drawing, painting and sculpture. He lectures at the Smithsonian Institution, Johns Hopkins, Towson University, Notre Dame University of Maryland, and has designed online art courses for The New York Times Knowledge Network and the University of Maryland Global Campus with a focus on Art History and Graphic Design.

During this pandemic, Joseph is holding a series of new virtual classes.  You will receive a zoom link for each session 24 hours in advance.  These classes are well-researched courses on art and architecture of different periods. Joseph provides insights  on specific works and artists and provides a detailed reflective critical analysis.  The audience is made up mostly of seniors who are genuinely and seriously interested in art and wish to learn more about appreciating the subject.  Each Class costs $100.

Rhythmic Flow, ink and wash and acrylic, 2018

Art works by Joseph Paul Cassar are available to view at the back table during each class.  They are for sale and can make a good gift.  Prices are very reasonable.  Once the work goes to private galleries the prices go up significantly.  The works are all original, signed and dated and packed in acid free special plastic folders.

Pioneers of Modern Art in Malta Volume II, 2019

Professor Cassar will be launching his second volume of Pioneers of Modern Art in Malta.  The first volume came out in 2010.  It won first prize for scholarly research in the Book Festival in Malta.  These two volumes are considered as a benchmark study on the subject. The book is being published by Heritage Malta which is the main custodian of Maltese Art with special support from Artemisia Fine Arts and Antiques.  This book will be launched on Saturday  November 30, 2019 at MUZA: Malta National Art Gallery. 

PIONEERS OF MODERN ART IN MALTA, VOLUME II

ISBN: 978-99932-57-71-4

This second volume of Pioneers of Modern Art in Malta starts with the early 1960s and ends in 1980. It covers the impact of British Art on Maltese art and discusses the presence and influence of Victor Pasmore in Malta.  Other modern groups are highlighted within a spirit of renewal, such as Spectrum ’67, Vision’74 and the Artists’ Guild.  The 1970s are presented as years of experimentation complete with a critical analysis of major exhibitions of this time.
